As long as there is a pedal and some metal, there will be speeders. But America’s biggest speeders -- apparently worried about rising gas prices and more aggressive traffic cops -- appeared to ease up last year.

According to INRIX, a Kirkland, Wash.,-based traffic firm that monitors GPS data, the average motorist on the nation's fastest roads traveled 81 mph, down from 85 mph last year. The top recorded speed by a motorist in the company's crowd-sourced network of over 4 million GPS-enabled vehicles, including drivers using the INRIX smartphone app, was 94 mph.

According to Forbes, most of the roads are long, lonely stretches of highway connecting urban centers.

Here are the six fastest roads in America, according to the INRIX data:


1. Northbound Arizona State Route 79 Between Saguaro National Park And Phoenix
Average speed of fastest 5 percent: 88 mph

2. Oklahoma State Highway 33 In Both Directions Just Northwest Of Oklahoma City

INRIX spokesman Jim Bak said Oregon drivers appeared to be more mindful of their speeds. “Nothing in Oregon showed up in the top 10th percentile of data,” he said.

I'm surprise that I-95 is not there! I ride 80-90 here most of the time and I have people still passing me sometime...

I agree. I'm in Virginia where radar detectors are illegal and you still have 50% of the cars on I-95 going at least 80 mph in a 65 mph zone. If you do the speed limit on I-95 you run the risk of being rear ended at high speed.

In AZ, Yes it is.

It's a bit more scary on the East coast where we have about 100X more traffic volume and trees lining both sides of the highways and everyone (even semi's) are doing 85+ 4 feet from your helmet! I avoid the interstates every chance I can around here.
