This sounds like a motor that will change the way we travel. It's efficiency coupled with tremendous weight reduction would change all modes of transportation as we see it.

Pretty exciting when you think of it's economic impact with rising fuel costs as well as reducing pollution and possibly making lower cost, lighter weight vehicles.

If they really can make this thing, it will definitely be the way of the future.

I want to follow this closely because it really sounds promising. I also want to see this baby run!

So they finally figured out how a bumble bee flies!

I guess that's the basic technology they're using for combustion efficiency.

I'll bet they find a way to tune the motor's wavelengths for even more efficiency at different RPM...:)

I really hope they're successful with this!
 
if its only application will be for hybrid use then it probably cannot withstand much load/torque. i wonder if the technology could power an automobile under its own power instead of being used as a generator to run yet another motor that propels the machine. depending on RPM range and power output, maybe a staged turbo setup could be used for efficiency once the tech advances... maybe.

I didn't read much on it, but if I understand the idea: this engine will always run as a generator to supply power to electric motor which will drive the wheels (like Fisker), correct?


I'm thinking that if it's got 3.5 times the efficiency of present internal combustion engines you could string them together for lots more ponies and torque. The lack of internals to overcome it's own inertia should make it available to more dynamic applications as a stand alone motor as well. So because of the great weight loss and higher RPM capability we may see an evolution of how we transfer power to drive lines. Even if it will only be used to generate electrical power it's a great step in the direction we need to be going to help free us from heavier fossil fuel use.

I think this may have benefits for electricity generation in a large scale too - put several (or more) of them on an armature, use coal to heat water and direct the steam into the rotor mechanism.

I wonder if efficiencies will be realised in that kind of application?

Maybe pulse the steam jet to mimic the rhythmic detonation and one would think that the pulse wave might still exist?

Next it'll be flying cars! (saving several hundred kg of engine weight, means the chassis won't need to be as strong, and result in more survivable accidents due to the lower inertia of the moving vehicle etc.)

I can see greater benefits in trucks - like trains, they would benefit from the huge torque of an electric motor (in each wheel?)

If this is a viable technology, the potential is incredible.

Believe it or not, train locomotives are electric powered. They use the big diesel engine as a generator. There's no reason this couldn't be applied to more cars and work trucks.

Very true! Locomotives have great weight and the electric motors produce incredible torque to get it all moving. They don't use HP or torque to measure a locomotive's power. They use Tractive Effort or Tractive Force. Tractive force - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Imagine using "Wave Disk" technology instead of diesel. Less pollution, lighter weight, less moving parts, less maintenance. This technology could translate to tractor and trailers.

Leave my short stroke 90 degree twin alone though! :rolleyes:
