12,000 rpm * 4 cylinders = 48,000 explosions per minute

48k/min * 1min/60sec = 800

Or perhaps I completley misunderstand how an internal combustion engine works, which is entirely possible.

Each cylinder only explodes (ignites) every other rotation of the crank shaft. The in-between motion is the exhaust phase of the cycle.

interesting thought....good to see I'm not the only guy that just had to the
math after reading it...:D

and rsw81 is correct, on a 4 cycle engine, not every down stroke is a power
stroke, every other one is, with the one in between being an intake stroke

The original post was right:

48k/min * 1min/60sec = 800 then / 2 = 400

You need to divide this by 2, it is a 4 stroke, only 1 fire every 2 rpm. 800 would be right if it was a 2 stroke...

Machines amaze me. I used to walk right by a 600 Megawatt generator every morning on my way to the shop at the power plant I worked at. The generator rotor weighed 55 tons and that thing rotated 60 times every second. The rotor was coupled to a steam turbine that had multiple blade sections the largest being about 12 feet across. I can't even guess how much it weighed. It was being pushed by 1500 psi steam though. Yep I love my work.
