Shouldn't it be 800?
12,000 rpm * 4 cylinders = 48,000 explosions per minute
48k/min * 1min/60sec = 800
Or perhaps I completley misunderstand how an internal combustion engine works, which is entirely possible.
Each cylinder only explodes (ignites) every other rotation of the crank shaft. The in-between motion is the exhaust phase of the cycle.
I knew I had no idea about what I was talking about...
