I've wired an ACE 6000 series spedo/tech to my DRZ project. It was very easy and straight forward. However, I don't think I'd tackle that project with the FZ6. Our spedo is also an interface with the ECM. By hacking the connectors you will certainly lose functionality with the ECM (on-board diagnostics), but you may also lose all communication and functionality. This is just my opinion/fear...have other had success with this?

Plus1^^^^^^

The FZ6 incorporated a data line out from the ECU to a CPU in the instrument cluster. This data includes fault/error codes, speed, rpm, engine coolant temp, CEL and fuel gauge. All of these forementioned sensors are read by the ECU and it clocks out the data on one wire to the cluster CPU to be displayed by the readout.

Where it might get tricky is if there is not an engineering standard to read and handshake the data to a non OEM cluster. Directional indicators, oil level sensor, neutral safety light, high beam indicator are all direct via separate signals.

For these reasons I would try to obtain and interpret specifications on any non OEM instrument cluster to insure compatibility.
You might just want to up grade to the S2 type instrument cluster.

Yellow with a blue tracer wire is your data line and it should not be attached at any time to an incompatible voltage source.

And this is exactly why we have forums! Thanks in advance. I'll use that gauge on my Virago or something..

So the S2 cluster, looks to be the same as theFZ6R cluster? FZ1? FZ8 has a cool white face, all the same maybe...

I believe those clusters will work but the rpm redlines may be different. :) Of course you'd probably already have shifted and be out of your power band by any difference in top revs

so the hose that comes between the throttle bodies under the tank, where does it go?

43E995E5-5742-4E18-A38B-991B6FAE9742.jpeg

and for the tank itself, there are 2 hoses coming down. i think i remember one went straight down and the other to my evap box, which i’m deleting. can they both just exit to nothing?

There is an air intake (breather) hose and a vent (drain) on the bottom of the tank and they do vent to open air (see attached page 2-47 in the FSM). The hose with the plastic fitting can be found in the parts catalog (see link) and is referred to as "Pipe 4" and that does go to the canister.

I do remember that being referred to as the "cali can". My bike has no such thing. Good luck with the hoses, I had a hard time after about an hour, can't imagine tackling it after a few YEARS!
