By now you all know my poor FZ6 has been in the shop, due to a knocking noise coming from the engine. Well after 9 weeks and almost 4 thousand dollars worth of parts and labor...its Finished. if you dont know the story ill fill you in............I took the bike to my local Yami dealer to have the noise checked out, bike was still under factory warranty (by just 10 days)...the shop found broke clutch plates, and abnormal wear patterns on one shift fork, as well as first and second gear. They decided that they would replace those parts and put a new clutch basket in while they had it apart........5 weeks after dropping it off i get a call that i can pick it up at noon the next day, i show up early to be there for the first hit of the starter.........My baby roars to life, only to have the same freeking knock :spank:.......they tell me that they will tear the entire engine down to the bear block witch they did, and found NO problems whatsoever .....they went ahead and replaced: pistons rings, wrist pins, rod bearings, rods, and pistons.......................................................................got a call today, motor is done, in the frame and about to be fired up, and ridden to seat the new parts.........a couple hours later i get another call.....bike runs better than new BUT......................................................................................
.......................................................................................................
............................IT STILL KNOCKS!!!!!!!!!!:spank::spank::spank:

my dad is picking it up tomorrow and hauling it to me at school....the yami shop is calling a yamaha specialist tech to look at it in a few weeks, but till then i will ride it like i stole it, i have a two year extended warranty so no worries.......just wanted to share my nightmare!

Well don't know what to say other than sorry for your frustration man. I hope it gets straightend out soon as I know you do also. By the way I believe I read you right but thought I would ask to make sure. The $4000.00 you mentioned? You didn't pay that? Right?

Holy crap!!! And they call themselves "professionals"

I think it's time for a trade in!

NO WAY did i pay the bill all covered under warranty!

after the tech looks at my bike, i believe i will trader her off, the poor thing only has 4k miles on it....my dealer has a cobalt 08 that they would give me for my bike and 2k, the only way i could afford to do that deal is if i could get the 08 for my 06 and 1k...they dont have any leftover 07 or i would take one of those

Make them do the trade if it still knocks or they need to fix it. The bike didnt knock when it was new, did it?

My dad is going to try and work a deal tomorrow, the bike is three hours away from me.......so i guess i may have a o6 with a new motor and a knock, or an 08 who knows

Put it back on them. Get your dad to ask them if they would want to ride a bike that knocks all the time. It's just not right!!! Good luck, I hope it all works out for you.

Wow, definitely cantact Yamaha relations. That's a long time without a bike, and they still can't fix it... They need to make it right.

I agree. The cost to Yamaha for a motor is probably only $2,000 plus shop labor.

Porsche had a motor problem with the first Boxsters years ago, everyone got a new motor, no questions asked.

I got the bike back today!

still knocks pretty bad, no difference from when i took it in, the dealer told me i could have it and ride it until Yamaha tells them what to do about it. I have a strong feeling i will be riding a cobalt blue 08 in a few weeks.

The owner of the dealer ship is a good friend of my dads and Saturday he and my dad are going to see what the best deal they can come up with for the 08, bc i am fed up with dealing with my 06 and I hope Yamaha steps up to the plate and treats me right, they always have in the past ive rode nothing but Yamaha for the past 10 years, never had this type of problem.

I'm a firm believer that it's in the transmission. You originally said when in gear and loaded up the noise stops. That would indicate it's not the bottom end as the higher load in gear would stress the bearings and cause knocking. Piston slap? well it's either there or it isn't. it doesn't just disappear until the engine warms up and the pistons expand enough to fill the bore. and thats assuming its barely out of spec. if its bad it will slap forever.

either way youre most likely going to get taken car of.

I see a new '08 with very little cash layout ahead! Good luck and keep us posted. We all want to know how Yamaha treats you on this one!

FINALLY!!!!! i rode my bike from home to Durant OK where i go to college, and took it to the Yamaha dealer here bc they had a regional Technician there, he pulled out the stethoscope listened to it for about 15 min and told me he was 100 percent sure what the noise was.

When the clutch plates broke a piece of them got between the teeth on the clutch basket and the crank gear, causing the them not to mesh very well in that spot. He said most likely the piece of clutch is gone seeing how they tore the entire engine down and the damage done to the crank gear is not visible to the naked eye. He told me its not the first time he has heard of this, and it seems every time it does the dealers go through the entire engine without finding it.

SOO verdict is i need a new Crank bc the gear is made on the end, I am not giving them the bike till the dead of winter, the tech said there is no harm in riding it, just the annoying knocking noise.

can you get a sound bite of it and post it? I curious if it's the same noise my FZ6 was making

Yay!:cheer: Glad you are finally back on 2 wheels, enjoy the rest of the season! (and get some good earplugs)

Sorry for your problems.
9 weeks without a bike is a long time in the Danish biking calendar.
I would trade it in as fast as possible and get another FZ6.

It is so rewarding to have a true professional give you the verdict. It would have driven you mental if you were still wondering why.

Good luck with it.
