Anybody gotten a ticket or been cited for too loud an exhaust??

Hey guys, just got my new Vance and Hines CS One on the Versys, and my god is it a beast!

That being said what makes it a beast is the amount of noise that comes out of it lol...
If Satan manifested himself into a motorcycle exhaust it would be this one lol

I got used to the hum that the OEM exhaust made, and i was used to wind noise and only ever heard the exhaust if i got above 7k rpm. I took it for a test ride tonight in 29F :rockon: and needed gas, going through town i got that uneasy feeling you get when you know your vehicle (car or bike) is illegal and try to avoid cops at all times.... I can't help but think even at 2 or 3k rpms i'm going to attract every cop within 5 miles of me... i mean it isn't crazy loud, it's not a friggen harley for sure, but i suspect people aren't going to take kindly to me ripping through backroads next to town at 2am on my breaks lol...

So has anyone actually gotten a ticket for their exhaust being too loud??

I like the noise coming out of it but i HATE more than anything else in the world, riding in fear of tickets... Maybe i'm over-reacting?

There are some extremely loud bikes in my area, and I am a firm believer in loud pipes save lives.

This is way I like stock pipes. You can rip around in the early morning late at night, break the speed limits and not worry about attracting any unwanted attention.

But with loud pipes you either drive slower and rethink using it as a commuter or adopt the attitude It's my right to be loud and screw anyone else. And even if you find a compromise whenever you're out on a ride in the back of your head you think was it worth the $500.

Steve, good points, I personally don't mind the noise however, I live in a very populated area and want to make myself as noticeable as I can to other drivers

I think I can safely say that I have one of the loudest exhaust out there lol, I have passed cops at 8k in the gas and at around 10k downshifting and (knocking on wood) still haven't been pulled over. The only people I've here of getting ticketed for their exhaust is when they were doing something stupid to begin with or being rude to the officer

I have ridden with dozens of forum members, and they have all mentioned that my pipes (Remus - no baffles) are very loud.

Here in Vegas, I have been pulled over specifically for the reason that my pipes were too loud. I had a cop follow me for two miles and since I was riding so perfect, he could not find a reason to pull me over, so he used that card. No ticket, just wanted to see I had all my paperwork.

Several years ago, I did receive a performance award, and in court, the cop said "I heard him coming" but he did not cite me for the pipes.

I'm sorry, but for those who say Loud Pipes Save Lives, you are fooling yourself, and you are putting yourself at risk everytime you get on your bike if you think that way.

I am a firm believer that Loud Pipes helps you get noticed, and that you can take advantage of that by helping you get noticed whenever you're in somebody's blind spot, or if they are backing up out of a stall. Your loud pipes is not going to be as effective and stop somebody from pulling out if front of you in their sound proof car since your pipes are pointing the opposite way.

I haven't had any problems on the bike, got off with a warning when I was pulled over in the mustang for that being too loud though.

You just answered it. You can't rely on your pipes, when it comes to saving yourself out on the streets, you must rely on your mental skills than anything else.

It's all about Knowing How, Where and What to look for and placing yourself within the roadway that allows you the best opportunity to provide visilbility for yourself and to others and at the sametime, allowing yourself the safest path of travel that will provide you the maximum amount of time and surface area if any corrective action needs to be taken. This is why I'm not fond of riders riding in the right lane that have multiple lanes travelling in each direction. What can loud pipes do when a car pulls out from a driveway or parking spot? Just like a horn, you can use it but you can't rely on it.

Having loudER pipes is one thing, but there's a limit i think. some pipes are just asocial... if you drive around at night in a city where you know there are kids sleeping (and other people for that mather), i think a cop is well in his rights to fine you for it... i know i would if i were one.

No reckless driving, anticipation and looking around every corner are a LOT more effective to prevent accidents then loud pipes.

I've experienced the blast from Kenny's Remus pipes. Yes they are loud and they have a distinctive scream to them. They are bad-ass.

I have the same exhaust on mine, unbaffled Remus. It sounds awesome, but yes, it's loud. I've ridden by, and next to, police cars and have not been bothered yet.

On the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" topic, during the day, I let the bike sing as loud as it wants to. Let the surrounding world know I'm around.

At night, not so much. If I'm riding through my neighborhood later at night, I keep the RPM's as low as I possibly can to keep the noise down. I don't like it when Harley guys leave the bar one block away from me at 1am as loudly as they can possibly be, why would I do the same thing?

I'm with Steve on this one. If I decide to (slightly) exceed the speed limit or be leaning more than a 30º angle in corners I certainly don't want the LEO's to know that I'm coming before I can see them. :thumbup:

Knowing that I have very loud pipes, I leave at 0500 and ride to work each morning taking off out of my neighborhood making the least amount of noise if that's possible.

However, when President Obama was in town last week staying at some small hotel not too far from where I live, I made it a point to make sure I screamed by making as much attention as possible to tease the dozen or so cops who were stationed in front of the President's hotel. They were assigned to the presidential detail, therefore unless they thought that I was some threat to him, I knew that they could not leave their post. The look on their face from the group of cops drinking their coffee as I acclerated by like I was at a drag strip. Priceless!
