This is our Christmas tree. I just got the topper today, thought it was funky.

Stop looking at my title!
I haven't taken a picture of mine yet because I'm a slacker but I do have a question. Do you start stringing your lights at the bottom or at the top? I am a firm beliver in starting at the top my wife is a firm beliver in starting at the bottom. (Please note that outside tree lighting is different and sometimes you MUST start at the bottom for ideal plug placement which CAN be an arguement for inside trees but is worthless because you can turn the tree or use an extension cord to the center)
We discovered this issue our first year with a christmas tree (luckily it was in an apartment so it was a small tree). She asked me to hang the lights so I started at the top and she told me I was doing it all wrong. I said do you want to hang the lights. She said no. I said then I will do it my way if you want to do it your way then you can hang the lights. She mumbeled something about it being wrong again so I took the christmas tree and its lights and pitched it out the back door into the forest and yelled "Run free! And never let those real trees hold you back!". To its credit the thing got some really good hang time.
Needless to say our new tree is prelit so we can enjoy a merry christmas.

I always start at the top. Now that I think about it, there is really no good reason for me doing it that way...I just do lol. Maybe because if you run out of lights at the top it would look really funny, but at the bottom the presents cover it anyway?!?

99% sure there won't be a tree in my house this year. We're in between homes right now as we just bought a house and are spending all our free time there, trying to get it situated (refinishing the floors while it's empty, and painting) so we can move in before Christmas. I'm going to do the best I can to get lights in the windows at least.

the malls usually have a nice x-mas tree set-up, just go down there and open your gifts under the tree.....

Not a bad idea.
The plus side, we'll be able to get one after christmas for pretty cheap.
Another plus side, my aunt and uncle own a christmas shop, and I'll be visiting them the saturday after christmas this year, so I may be able to get the hook up.

Start at the top... Plug placement is key, but then again, if you start at the bottom, you can place the plug exactly where you want it and work toward the top to plug in the star or angel.
We got ours and put it up Sunday. I still have some work to do to it but hope to have a pic of it tonight! We went and cut our own on Saturday and put it in the stand. I didn't move it to the final spot until Sunday, then cut the string and started decorating. It drank over a gallon of water overnight too. It has settled down and is drinking at a nice even pace...

Here is my Christmas tree and the gifts from my family
Here's my christmas tree-to-be. It's a one year old spruce sapling I got from a farm fair a few weeks ago. Last weekend it grew those funny little twigs on the top. It'll be a great x-mas tree in 8 or 10 years.
I decorated it myself.

That's why I start at the bottom. If you wind up with excess at the top, start back down again (my topper doesn't plug in).
Excess lights at the bottom would be harder to hide...can't start going back up again

A Christmas Story for people having a bad day:
When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas pressure.
Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.
When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.
Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.
Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drank all the cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.
Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.
The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you Where would you like me to stick it?'
And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.
