I just got my new 2007 FZ6 and the sales guy offered me the extended warranty which would cover the bike for 4 additional years (5 years total) and it was less than $400....what do you all think, DEAL or NO DEAL!?!?!?

By coincidence, I opted for the same: extra 4 years for $400 on my 2007 FZ6. Warranty covers electrical and motor and I'm supposed to be able to opt out anytime and receive refund. I'm still debating if I should apply for the refund. You can always pay for the extended warranty sometime later (during your factory warranty period), right? (of course, sales rep won't want to answer this probably). There are m/c extended warrranty companies on-line if you want to compare.

Check out the earlier thread about the Yamaha Extended Service:

While $400 does not sound bad compared to the cost of a new bike; you will find that most users here never had the need to even use the extended warranty.

Cheers

I work at a dealer here in S.C. and see a fair amount of extended warranty work, one thing to also consider is Yamaha is considerably more inclined to warrant none warrantable items on a good will basis when you have purchased the extended policy.

This is fact as I make the calls to Yamaha and request coverage on the issues.

You got my wheels turning now. What sort of work do you see done with the extended warranty. How old are the bikes, and are they FZ6s?

I should have been more specific, no particular models were in mind while I wrote my post. My intention is to suggest that Yamaha has shown repeatedly to favor helping extended warranty holders when questionable issues arise.

Hope I've not complicated your post here.

That doesn't make a lick of sence! The purchase price of my motorcycle includes one year of warrenty, parts and labor. I should not have to purchase additional coverage that DOES NOT go into effect until AFTER the factory warrenty expires. Does Yamaha have a sliding scale or something to help them decide if they will honor the claim? I know that if I damage the bike is isn't covered, no worries I'll take my lumps. Seems to me there are grounds for legal action if they are not unbiased in their warrenty claims. That is absolute CRAP!

Tim - I am in no way pissed at you, just what seems to the fact the Yamaha doesn't have the balls to stand behind their own documentation.

Pete ... I was referring to non warranted claim requests ... example, when asking Yamaha for their help when the failed part is not their responsibility.

Even if the warranty, original or extended has since expired Yamaha may offer their help when asked ... having paid for the extended warranty may or may not encourage a purely unbiased freebie.

I have seen it go in the consumers favor more often than not when the extended warranty had been purchased .... even though expired.

Make sense?

Tim

i never know when to get extended warranties, I usually dont get them. its like gambling. They wouldn't offer them to you if they werent a money maker. Seems like every where you go someone is offering you an extended warranty, I bought a sump pump at Home Depot the other day and they asked. I wonder if they give extended warranties on Viagra:D:D:D

Okay, I get it now, thanks for clarifying Tim. I'll stand down now...

I never buy an extended warranty during the first year. I usually wait until the factory 12 months go out then buy a 2 year extended. It works out cheaper by 100 bucks or so.

i bought my bike for 6k otd ....and my warranty for 1500!

Sounds crazy, but its only for 3 years. Howvever it includes all factory servicing including parts , oil ect and each year for 2 years I get a new set of tires (even though mine arent worn yet i'll have spares for the inevitable screw/nail) and 2 brake jobs. I figure its an ok deal but it saves my poor student butt from having to come up with money to get the servicing done...
