Turning an FZ6 into an R6?

Ahh, the thread that just won't die.

I look at it this way, if you want to mod the motor or replace it with an R6, do it! It would be a fun project. Half the fun of the project if figuring out how to make it all work.

Personally I like the way that Wolfman is going with the big bore kit. I think that along with a set of cams will be a great combination. No replacement for displacement, right?

On the other hand you could buy an R6 and put in a set of Convertibars and get a better saddle. With that option you get the motor and a much better suspension. It all depends on what you like.

Do what makes you happy. Blown Busa???

I agree. Yes, simply buying an R6 would be the easiest and possibly cheapest option. But where is the fun in that? What if besides the riding position, you found the half-faired FZ6 better looking? I have a friend that has a CBR and he rides with the lower fairings removed, the FZ is much better looking. You could probably do the same with the R6 (haven't actually checked) but just like the CBR, it wasn't designed like that so there would be bolt holes, non-stainless headers, etc. I too like what Wolfman is doing. Personally I find working on the bike and having fun projects with it just as much fun as actually riding it:eek:

Great info from all!!

Thing is I like the FZ6 riding position. I WILL be buying an R1 at some point for my speed-needs...but I am not so rich yet.

I want a bike to fill 4 roles when all is said and done.

1) general purpose commuter and minor touring --FZ6

2) track and ripping around town --R1

3) trail riding --unknown

4) long range cruise missile --unknown

So, I do have other needs the FZ6 wont fulfill as well as a dedicated machine would. And I cant afford to really buy another for probably another riding season to be realistic. It would be nice to upgrade the FZ6 into something a little more fierce and give her some extra touring mods to try and fill slots 2 and 4 a little bit better until I can afford to buy some more specialized bikes.

This thread has given me some good options I will definitely look into next season.

I am thinking of this:

1) power commander and engine mapping

2) big bore kit

3) full fairing

4) new seat

5) givi hard bags

That should fill in two categories and still be cheaper than buying a brand new machine in addition to the FZ.

I might forego the big bore kit. How expensive is a big bore kit and installation? I know a guy who works for half the cost of a dealership (he does it for like 50 bucks an hour labour plus parts at cost) and would likely have him doing the work with me looking over his shoulder (I like to learn by watching, then doing it myself the second time it ever gets done).

The Big bore kit route, including buying the pistons, the cams, etc, etc, getting a rebore, including getting the cylinders re-lined (nikasel coated bore), dyno tunes, etc, plus lots of labour...is an expensive job....probably going to end up costing me about $6000 (Aus)...big pennies, but massive grin factor!

holy mother of wowzers!!

thats bat**** insane!

ok...no big bore kit for me.....

:D

that does sound pretty epic tho i must say.

Hi everyone.

I am really tired of that meaningless (at least for the topic) coments like:

Just buy a R6
Just buy a FZ1
Just buy a R1
Just buy a SS1200R
Just buy a rocket

Those comments are just meaningless for the topic, help on nothing.

I have a FZ6n S2 ABS and i really really love it, it´s power is awesome on city but as almost everyone has noted when do you drive a R6 is bottom end sucks but as it start to gain RPM it convert it self in a rocket, so powerfull... it can even do wheelies more easy than FZ6 and as the cam shaft is lighter it can go 1.500 rpm more = more final speed.

i will be honest, i hate the FZ1, the R6 and the R1, why? they has those ****ing fauglys chasis solders that i hate and that´s the number one reason why i am in love of my FZ6, even if doesnt have the sexiest swing arm, the chasis is a work of art, there is no R6 that can match the cute of the FZ6 chasis, is just so pure, so intact, so modern. and what about those sexy underseat exhaust? no words there... is a matter of taste, ABS no words here too, i will trade even 20hp just to have ABS, that thing ROCKS! saved my life a couple of times. (Mostly learning to drive this big bike)

I argue this because nobody seems to understand why we just don´t buy another bike, maybe is because there isn´t another bike to fall in love with? well that´s my case, the FZ6 beautiful chasis win my heart and i will never trade it for other bike since i will see this kind of perfection again, so call me a fool for wanting to get more power of my bike, but that´s the reallity.

I love my bike as every FZ6 Owner.

So please no more stupid coments like before, if you don´t have anything to say about the topic, why just don´t get in silence?

talk about a first post. dig up a two year old thread and start yelling at everyone in it. first impressions... you must be the life of the party... you're sure going to be a joy to have around here. :BLAA:

Lol! I see where you are coming from though....it drives me nuts as well, when people say get an R6......I SAY **** OFF! You get an R6 if you want an R6! I love my FZ6's, and your right, that frame is a thing of beauty unrivalled by most other bikes, as is the tank...dead sexy!

Welcome by the way...

LOL!! Awesome.

"I am really tired of that..."

Not even posted more than once and already pushed to the limit. You should never own a firearm haha.

But yeah, people saying you should just buy an R1 or R6 don't get it. The point of having an FZ bike is to take advantage of its practicality. The point of turning it into something closer to an R6 or R1 is to close the performance gap.

Some people go the other way and take an R1 or R6 and find ways to creatively turn them practical. People that tell them "just buy an FZ6 or FZ1" really just don't get it. You want the PERFECT bike for YOU and it usually falls into a grey area and you have to CREATE it.

This is an old post, but i just found it. I would have to say to anyone who is thinking of this, first ride an R6, They are faster but it seems that you have to beat the motor and keep the revs high for that power IMO. I find riding the broader power band of the FZ6 more my style at least.

First off, lulz at this thread resurrection for the purpose of rant. :rof:

Secondly, you nailed it Lone! I'll never want an R6 or R1, as I don't really like the look of them, and that riding position would kill my back! Plus the FZ's are cheaper to insure, and I don't have to constantly wind the piss out of them to get moving. They're just plain more "streetable". I also don't see FZ's every sunny day, so that's a plus in my book. If I ever want more power, I'll figure out how to squeeze it out of the FZ6, or jump to an FZ1. It's all about personal taste! Another example : People thought I was crazy for commuting on a TW200, but you know what? It worked just fine for me! :BLAA:

Funny thread regarding Ram air.
Effective engine bay designs offer clean air from ahead of the vehicle which is less likely to be heated and/or divided by obstacles creating eddies and turbulence in that air. This clean air is what's helping more so than "RAM effect" as Clean is clean all the time and RAM only helps when the pressure is above ambient (speeds above the 70??).

At low speeds, clean air more dense and the water molecules are closer together allowing the combustion chamber to get maximum expansion of the F/A mixture when burned.

The FZ gets the engines ambient heat plus the radiator warmed air at the air box. Neither are ideal for peak power output. Great for cold weather operation tho as the engine will run smoother sooner on cold mornings (All purpose FZ6 fits the bill here).

Even better - Lone has a FZ1 now!

Couldnt have been said better! Just watch any race from motogp to nascar the guy who gets out in front in clean air....is gone...but lone just got a R1 not a fz1

^ oppsee wrong bike. . .

Back to air intake: A ride home last week.

The ambient temp was 56F and the bike was outside and not ridden for 8 hrs. I switched the temp from Coolant to Air temp and observed the following:
It was late and getting colder as I rode and the bikes reported temp started at 54~ish and climbed to 73F even after sustained highway speeds of 60mph.

Moral of the story, at 5000 rpm the bike doesn't move enough volume of air through the intake track to keep it cool. Especially during stop and go riding it just gets hotter under the tank around the air box.
