Sena SMH10B Firmware Version 5.0 Update With Universal Intercom Support!

Anyone using an intercom? What type of speeds do they become ineffective at?

A few of us SoCal riders are using the Sena units. I have the SMH10R which is very compact. The only down side I can see with my unit is it is not glove friendly if you have heavier gloves so the units that have the wheel are easier to operate which is great and the quality of communication bike to bike is great as well as the bluetooth with all the Sena units.
I had a Chatterbox that had bluetooth and GMRS radio (US radio band) for radio communication with other bikes. The unit was easy enough to operate but they never improved the audio processing which was noisy at highway speeds.
How a lot of audio processing is done today is through digital processing that is dependent on programming code. Basically the part of the audio we want preserved is the human voice while rejecting other ambient noise. Sena does this very very well.
When my wife calls on the phone she says the Sena is so good as far as audio noise rejection in comparison to my old Chatterbox. The bike to bike communication is also great quality. The distances claimed will vary on terrain and we can lose each other while talking in a turn in the mountains because of rock between us. Bike to bike is realistically 1000 ft line of sight.
Speed related to wind noise is not a problem because the audio output is very loud if you need it to be. I wear earplugs and I hear fine because the volume is so great.
I've seen some less neat installs of these units but mine turned out super nice. Just take your time.
What models (SMH5 SMH10) you can talk to will vary with the SMH10R being which is more compatible with other units but the other units may not be compatible with the SMH10R.
All of the Sena SMH series are great units.

If you have a ZUMO 550 and use your Sena headset to listen to the turn by turn directions you may want to wait before you upgrade to 5.0. There seems to be an issue with the multipoint pairing for ZUMO 550s.
I split an SMH10 dual pack with my old man, the intercom is handy on long rides and works pretty far away (800+ feet) before it starts to get static-y.
I use SMH10. I very rarely use it for calls, but the few times I've answered, going over 70.. my wife had no idea I was out on a bike! Impressive unit.
I too wear ear plugs full time, so even with volume fully cranked up, the music does fade at highway speeds, but perfect for slower riding.

Another happy SMH10 user. I have the older one with the dial and usually it is not too difficult to mess with. The nob is a bit touchy and sometimes when I'm changing the volume it will think I pressed it and want an intercom. Great on a long trip for phone calls and generally knowing what's going on. Also stream my music from the phone via bluetooth. I need to figure out how to have a list of numbers to dial as I just let it dial the last number. Conversations at 70 or so are not difficult although looking forward to the audio in the earphones when talking on the phone as I have difficulty judging how loud I'm talking and usually wind up screaming which bothers my wife - if it's too bad I'll have to call back The battery in the unit did run down on a 600 mile trip last summer but I charged it in the tank bag for an hour and was back in business.

I have the SMH10R as well and use it when Motogiro and I ride. Very nice units. I listen to music via Bluetooth and while the quality isn't perfect, it's acceptable. My wife also could not tell I was even riding when she called me. The noise filtering is that good. Great product!
I've been a user of the Sena SMH10B for a couple of years now after Wavex let me borrow his to use with Cali rider on a multi day ride. It made our trip so much more enjoyable being able to communicate with each other while on the road for 10 - 12 hours a day. It works great with my iPhone, both with phone calls and with my iTunes when slabbing it for long distances by myself. I bought Mrs. Lefty a unit as soon as she started riding again and I can't picture riding with her without a headset communicator. Very clear even with my ever present earplugs and I only time lose connection with Cali rider or the Mrs. is when we get separated by too many corners or over a quarter of a mile away when the "robot talk" kicks in, speed isn't a factor as much as distance is. :thumbup:

yet another reason to go with the sena headsets. I just upgraded mine and then linked it to a cheapo ebay headset i have on my dirtbike helmet and it worked!
